Mobile App vs Web App: Which Should You Build First?

Web apps typically cost between $10,000 and $50,000 to build. Native mobile apps start around $30,000 and can reach $150,000 or more. That two-to-three times cost gap exists for concrete reasons.

Mobile apps require separate code for iOS and Android unless you use a cross-platform framework like React Native or Flutter. They go through App Store review before launch, which adds time you cannot control. They also carry recurring fees: $99 per year for Apple and $25 for Google.

Alibaba saw a 76 percent lift in browser conversion rates.

When to Start With a Web App or PWA

Your users work at a desk. B2B dashboards, operations tools, and internal software see far higher desktop usage than the general 60 percent mobile web average. A web app reaches those users without asking them to download anything.

You need to validate before committing. A web app skips App Store review entirely. You push an update and every user sees it immediately. You can test and pivot without waiting on review cycles or asking users to update their installed version.

Your budget is under $30,000. Below that threshold, a native mobile app will be rushed, feature-limited, or both. A web app or PWA lets you build something complete.

Your product does not need phone hardware. If you are not relying on real-time GPS, camera integration, background audio, or biometric authentication, a web app handles almost everything else.

When to Build a Native Mobile App First

Hardware access is central to your product. Uber needs real-time GPS. Instagram needs camera filters and instant sharing. A fitness app syncing with a wearable needs deep hardware integration. Browsers can approximate some of this, but not at the same performance level.

Your users need to open it many times a day. Nearly half of smartphone users open apps more than 11 times daily. E-commerce app users spend about 202 minutes per month shopping inside apps, compared to 11 minutes on mobile web. Push notification click-through rates run around 4.6 percent on Android and 3.4 percent on iOS. If daily return behavior drives your business model, native gives you the tools to build it.

You are selling to consumers on mobile. Mobile app users convert at roughly three times the rate of mobile website visitors. Apps account for 54 percent of mobile commerce transactions. Customers who buy through an app show 23 percent higher retention after three months.

You have budget and proven demand. If you already know your audience wants this and have $50,000 or more to invest, native is worth it. Cross-platform frameworks like Flutter and React Native let you build for both iOS and Android from one codebase, which almost always makes more sense than building each platform separately.
